SAN DIEGO SHORES WATER POLO CLUB SEXUAL ABUSE & MISCONDUCT SAFETY SYSTEM (BASS) PRINCIPLE STATEMENT

San Diego Shores will always put the interests and safety of our athletes ahead of our own. We are committed to ensuring that we do everything we reasonably can to keep minors as safe from SAM (Sexual Abuse and Misconduct) as possible and therefore we will be actively involved with all our athletes’ safety activities. We will be transparent about our SAM risk so we can always understand how we need to manage it. We will ensure our BASS (Sexual Abuse and Misconduct Safety System) decisions are, as far as possible, informed by information we have verified is reliable. We will customize and keep customizing our BASS to make sure it meets the expectation that our activities are as effective as we can make them given the scope and scale of our SAM risk. We will also be committed to adapting to change as often as necessary. Our BASS-related decision-making processes will explicitly acknowledge the danger of cognitive biases which we know are particularly prevalent with SAM. We will confidentially share our BASS and its performance with BOKRIM (USAWP’s partner in overseeing how clubs work to keep their athletes safe) so we can contribute to improving child protection practices until the threat of SAM is eliminated.
